NEWS

The shop is still ongoing and due to the increased demand we will now be opening a minimum of the 1st and 3rd weekend each month, the dates are given on the products page to mark in your diary. The opening hours have now been extended and are detailed also.

We are continually adding new items to the product line with Steak pies in two sizes now available. After further trials we will be adding further varieties of pies and sausages over the coming months.

ON THE FARM

Winter has been somewhat interesting on both of the farms (Broad Nook and Lower Portland), with the amount of rain seen causing even more mud and mess than normal.

We are gradually increasing the herd numbers between the two sites with the normal split being the older cattle and any young ones at Broad Nook and the remainder of the stock at Lower Portland.

A few of the mundane jobs have been completed with stock fencing taking up a great deal of time. A few alterations to the cattle housing have been made to accommodate the increased numbers and the layout of the yard and cattle race have been changed for easier cattle management.

We have planted some new hedgerows and a small woodland area to encourage even more wildlife.  The pond at Broad Nook has seen a little more life in recent months a family of ducks has made frequent visits together with a lonesome heron that occasionally makes an appearance.

One morning in December, in the space of half an hour  we were lucky enough to see a mother rabbit with two young ones in the garden, a variety of birds including robins and thrush, the ducks, the heron on the pond and a young fox keeping an eye on all of the above! Millie and Charlie love to see the entire goings on, how lucky we are to live where we do.

The school that Millie and Charlie attend is an ‘Eco school’ and as part of their recent homework, Millie had to design a ‘Bug Hotel’ to encourage bugs and insects into the school garden.  We liked the idea so much that Neil has made the design a reality and we have now incorporated this into our own garden for the Children’s’ pleasure.

Over the summer months, we will be attending the local shows and galas as we have in previous years, we hope that the weather is kind at the events and look forward to seeing you there.

ENJOYMENT

For a local tasty takeaway, why not try Jacksdale Chip Shop (Golden Fry) 01773 783756, where Paula and Mark have built up a thriving business by varying the ‘standard’ menu. They include home-made Specials by Paula including Braising Steak, Meat and potato pie and minced beef and onion pie using our Broad Nook Beef.

If you enjoy eating out then may we suggest you try LAMBS at the Market, Cattle Market Tavern, 15 Nottingham Road, Mansfield, Notts. Tel 01623 424880
(next to Water Meadows). Troy Lamb and his family have converted the old cattle market tea-rooms into a lovely restaurant offering Modern British Cooking using locally sourced produce, including beef from Broad Nook Farm.  You are sure to receive a warm welcome from Ted and the staff and Troy will be busy in the kitchen at usual. The restaurant is open lunch times and evenings, the weekends are especially busy so booking is recommended.
