Neil and Jill run the farm together with Stuart, Millie and Charlie not forgetting the help support and experience of our parents.

Neil has lived on a farm all of his life (Lower Portland Farm) and has been involved since his teens with caring for the animals, wildlife and general farm maintenance. Neil has until recently been employed in a Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle dealership.

Jill has over 20 years experience with NatWest Bank and until leaving was an Assistant Manager for Small Businesses in the North Nottinghamshire Area.

With our joint experiences we feel we can offer excellence in our local produced beef venture.

In total we have approximately 125 acres to farm. We make our own hay and haylage for feeding and keeping the local farming community thriving and to keep the food miles low and reduce the carbon emissions from excess travel, we buy the corn and barley from another local farmer (less than 5 miles away)

HISTORY

Broad Nook Farm was previously owned by the local milkman and his wife, who had their own dairy herd and milk round until retirement, some 20 years ago. They continued to live at the property after retirement, but due to ill health and general old age it became somewhat run down.

Neil and Jill decided to purchase of the property in 1999 and to apply to demolish the existing bungalow and rebuild but keep the old original cowsheds and outbuildings to retain the character of the original farm.

  • The old cowsheds are currently used to house the younger calves.
  • In 2005 a new barn was built and this provides the housing over the winter months.
  • In summer the cows have grazing over Broad Nook Farm and our fathers farmland.
  • We have produced quality beef for three years, originally for family and ourselves.
  • This has now grown steadily with friends and neighbours and we now have around 150 regular customers who we supply every 3/4 weeks.
  • We grow our own hay and buy the straw for bedding and feed from a neighbouring farm thus keeping farming local.

THE FUTURE

Our plans include the following:

  • Attaining membership of a farm assurance scheme.
  • Attending local agricultural shows.
  • Growing the business steadily.
Maintaining high quality standards of beef and leaving a thriving legacy of good quality food for our children, through hard work, drive and commitment.
